The Incredible Hulk Last Call

The book opens in Reno, Nevada at Christmas time, which is odd considering that the comic book was just released this week.  But hey, who am I to judge when they set these things, right?  We see Dr Banner calling a suicide hotline and talking to the friend of his late wife, Betty Ross.

Banner talks about how he spent years thinking that the Hulk was brought about by rage, but with all the suicide attempts Banner has made over the years to rid himself of the green monster, he begins to wonder if it may be something else that triggers the reaction to transform into the Hulk as every time he tries to kill himself, the Hulk emerges and he’s saved from death.

Banner decides that this time he’s going to do it right if indeed he decides to go through with it, as he’s hired a hitman that we later find out is the merc with a mouth himself, the one and only Deadpool.

In this one-shot comic, we’re taken on a journey through Banner’s past, explaining how he became the Hulk (not the same way in the comics as in the movies) and his meeting, falling in love with and his relationship with Betty.

If you don’t know much about the Incredible Hulk or how he came to be, this is a great starting point for you.  Of course, it wouldn’t be a Hulk comic without a little action and we see the Hulk fighting a large green creature, though not Hulk-esque, that Betty turns into and he also fights a very large and mean Mr. Hyde.

The writing is good and the majority of the story takes place with Banner on the phone with the suicide hotline, so it’s not the most uplifting of tales.  Still, as I said before if you’re new to the Hulk or if it’s been a while since you’ve read up on him, this is a great place to start.

I’m a Hulk fan and I’m really happy this one appeared in my inbox this week.  If you haven’t read it yet, get to your local comic book shop and pick up The Incredible Hulk Last Call.  You’ll be glad you did.
